Message   All you folks seem to be well deserved fans of zbig's delightful artworks. These videos have reached far more viewers thru Classic Arts Showcase than thru PBS. Over the past 13 years, Classic Arts Showcase and its staff have made an extra ordinary contribution to the arts by bringing you the special, the unusual, the exquisite. Jamie Rigler, who programs the show, is a unique talent who generously shares his gifts with us, and picks up the tab, too!
Now, cybersquatters are attempting to hijack the good name and reputation of classic arts showcase by registering the domain name classic arts showcase and setting up a site which appears to link to DIRECT TV Direct tv DOES NOT carry Classic Arts Showcase!!
They turned it down when it was offered.
Don't be fooled. Let direct tv know you do not want to do business with firms that indulge in deceptive business practices. Classic Arts Showcase has been there for you, Be there for Classic Arts Showcase by e-mailing every entity you can think of to protest this dishonorable practice.

PS- I am in no way associated with the ARTS channel or CAS--other than being a devoted viewer.

Message   If you pay close attention, you will see that the actors did not walk all the way to the very top. Every 3 flights of steps or so, the actors will stop and another actor continued in a relay.

As I mentioned in the earlier post, the camera was on a track and was pointing at a fixed angle. The separate footage shot in front of the blue screen can be stitched together very easily.

Message   Jason,

The answer to your question is in "The making of the Orchestra" if you have the DVD. There is only one short set of stairs. The camera was mounted on a device that can repeat the same camera movement over and over again. Since each shot is moving in a consistent speed, you thought they are continuous when the director paste all the shots together.

Goerge Lucus used the same trick when he made Star Wars Episode IV over 20 years ago. When each star ship was shot individually using the same camera movement, all the shot could fit in together as if you shoot them all at once.

Just saw Stairway to Lenin for the first time on our arts channel on cable. Absolutely beautiful, moving, but also puzzling...how was it done? Obviously a staircase of that size was not built. My wife says it has to be a type of escalator, but I don't see that. Can anyone help us out here, we've got to know. Thank you.

Message   Dear Peter,
Sorry for a late response. I don't monitor this forum often, so I didn't read your comment until today. Thank you for your clarification.

Your comments only confirmed the points I expressed earlier. The Zbig's DVD is below DVD quality despite its medium. I am not a videophile myself. So I only know roughly the quality differences between video formats. As I recalled, VHS is at 240 lines of resolution, NTSC broadcast is at 325, Super VHS and Laser Disc is at 400, DVD is at 425. When you confirmed that the DVD was produced at broadcast quality, it means it was not produced at normal DVD quality. I admitted I was wrong when I suspected the DVD was merely a transfer of the VHS to the disc format. Though broadcast quality is a bit better than VHS, it is NOT DVD quality by far. Since the movie was produced for HDTV a decade ago, I expected the DVD would take advantage of the original HDTV quality, not from the inferior broadcast quality source.

I am disappointed that Zbig Vision is so out of touch with the DVD market despite your company's involvement with the state of the art technologies in the video industry.

If you care to visit your neighborhood BlockBuster store, you will find that all recent DVDs come in Pan & Scan format for 4:3 TV and anamorphic widescreen version enhanced for widescreen TVs, BUT no DVD puts widescreen material in 4:3 format like the Zbig DVD does. Almost every DVD producer knows it does not make sense to put black bars to waste the picture real estate when DVDs can be printed in widescreen format because the old style letterboxing produces inferior picture quality.

Your excuse to omit chapter for each section is lame. No movie is presented with chapters in theaters, but that does not stop producer to put chapters in DVDs. This simply means Zbig Vision is out of touch with what the viewers have come to expect from a DVD and is unaware of the norm in the DVD market.

I highly recommend Zbig's work, but I still think this DVD is a stain to Zig's name.

Message   Dear CP Lai and Jim,
Somebody forwarded link to musicolog.com with a note that there is a sort of war going on regarding Zbig DVDs.
Sorry, we didn't meet your quality expectations in The Orchestra DVD. That DVD has been produced for consumer market recipients (4:3 TVs ).
We checked with the lab and we are sure that this DVD keeps all the standards of DVD5 technology. Master used for this production was a broadcast quality One-Inch tape transferred from HD Master.
Regarding the chapters: our intention was to publish Zbigs films in the format they were created, so every film is a chapter not a part of it.

Message   I am able to watch about 10 hours of HD boardcasting from PBS every month. KQED in San Francisco is HD ready. I have requested via email to PBS programming to consider bringing back "the Orchestra" in HD format. They showed the movie in "the Great Performances" series over a decade ago. Of course, it was broadcast in regular format because HD was not around back then.

Given the picture quality I've seen in this DVD, I start to doubt if Zbig still has the original HD master. It would be a joke to show this DVD on the HD channel.

Message   The movie is great. It is undisputed. The awards proved that.

The DVD? It is shitty production. Anyone who owns a HD-ready TV can really tell the difference in picture quality between a HD source, a DVD, NTSC broadcast and VHS quality. This movie is VHS quality disguised in a DVD. As I pointed out earlier, my kids' "Piglet's Big Movie" has better picture quality than this DVD. Since the original movie was produced for HDTV, the DVD should be at least digitally mastered.

If you are watching this DVD on your 17" 10 year old TV, you don't even know what I'm talking about. But I expect Zbig to know what a decent DVD should look like. I can't believe he is willing to put his name behind this DVD.

Regarding the chapters, every movie made was intended to be viewed in one piece, that does not stop DVDs being made with chapters. This movie consists of multiple disjoint pieces with different composers and themes, there is no reason to omit the chapter marks. DVD are designed for random access. There is no excuse to do the DVD this way. The person who produced this DVD should be fired.

Message   I ordered "the Orchestra" DVD few days ago. I received it today. It was a total disappointment. I can't believe Zbig would put his own name on such crappy production.
If you just need a copy of the video and you can tolerate VHS quality, buy it. But if you expect DVD quality, don't bother. However, I decide to keep my copy because I don't have another version.

The DVD looks like it was a direct transfer of the VHS video onto the DVD media. The picture quality is pathetic. Given the movie was originally made for the HDTV market in Japan a decade ago, one may expect to see decent picture quality on DVD. VHS quality on DVD was a surprise to me. Though the movie is shot in widescreen, but the DVD is in 4:3 format with black bands on top and bottom. My kids' "Piglet Big Movie" looks 10 times better than this DVD on my HD-ready widescreen TV. Given Zbig is an expert in the video production industry, producing such low quality DVD in his name may ruin his own reputation. I'd suggest him to pull the DVD out of circulation rightaway.

Since there are several pieces in "the Orchestra", one would expect to be able to jump to each individual piece on the DVD. NO! The DVD only have two chapters, one for "the Orchestra", the other for "the making of". Can you believe that? I CAN'T!

Message   Does the producer of "Great Performances" have any plan to release this great piece of work in DVD format? Perhaps those interested should send the request to the station. WNET does sell some of their shows, see http://www.pbs.org/wnet/gperf/shop/intro.html

Since Zbig did it in HDTV format, a VHS or LaserDisc format will not do justice to this work. DVD, D-VHS would be the proper media especially for those who own a High definition TV at home.

zbig@sbcglobal.net replied to this thread earlier. He should post here more information about the availablity of the video or his plan to bring it back in a HD format.

It is a shame that this great work is not re-released at a time when HDTV is getting more and more popular.

Message   If my old notes are correct, The Orchestra was conceived and directed by Zbig Rybczynski in 1990 and shown on PBS TV's Great Performances in 1991 and rerun in Jan 1992. The six pieces played were: (1). Adagio in G Minor, Denon (2). Piano Sonata No. 2 Chopin's funeral march (3) Piano Concerto No. 21, Mozart (4). The Theiving Magpie, Rossini. (5). Ave Maria, Schubert. (6). Bolero, Ravel.
No. (2) above as a single piece is currently being shown entitled "The Piano Players" as one of the clips on Classic Arts Showcase on cable TV "public service" channels all over the country. Set your browser to classicartsshowcase.com to get your local channel and schedule. The clip says this is from Voyager Laserdisc.
I have a VCR copy of The Orchestra that is in poor shape and will begin an all-out search for this and any of this man's wonderful work I can find. I will post anything interesting I can find and would appreciate anything new anyone has found. John D. Neilson
